First celebrated in 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a chance to celebrate and acknowledge women who’ve made history and champion those making changes to encourage future generations.
Co-ed slowpitch softball is already quite a diverse and inclusive sport with its 5 men: 5 women format, which reflects modern-day gender integration in schools, workplaces, and other places, but for me this sport is by far the best when it comes to including women. It’s time to celebrate that and its female players.
So throughout March, as part of Women’s History Month and #IWD2021, we’ll be featuring female softballers on social media, who’ve made their mark, stepped up to the plate, got involved, and demonstrate our diversity and inclusion to others within our sport.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge, as from challenge comes change, so let’s not rest on our laurels.
Instead, let’s inspire other women to play. Let’s motivate ourselves to get involved as players, coaches, managers, captains, umpires, scorers, tournament organisers and more. Let’s reach out to more women from underrepresented communities. Let’s celebrate our achievements on and off the diamond.
Let’s challenge ourselves and others. Let’s create change. Let’s play ball!
