Carrie Trundle Cup results!

The CT Cup was given a revamp this year, pitting last years’ top 4 teams against each other in a single elimination tournament. This gave rise to a new competition, the CT Shield, for teams finishing lower than 4th in last years’ SUL. These culminated in a Finals day on July 3rd.

The second seed Brawlers disposed of the Cubs early on in the season to book their place in the final, while last years’ champs and first seed Sliders beat out the Angels. The grudgematch between the “Big Two” of SU for the past few years took place at Bangor Rugby Club on a warm and cloudy day, with plenty of passing spectators, and even a fire truck in case there were fireworks on the field! Odds looked to favour this years’ league leading perfect 9-0 (8-0 in the SUL) Brawlers against a struggling 4-4 (3-4 in the SUL) Sliders, especially when the Sliders had to play short-handed borrowing a big hitting Cub to make up to 9. In a hotly contested affair (no firemen were actually needed) the Sliders rallied to overcome an early deficit and land the CT Cup for the first time since 2012.

They say winning a cup makes a bad season good, and a good season great.

Earlier in the Day the Bucs and Smokin’ Aces battled it out in the final of inaugural CT Shield. After both successfully made it out of the round robin stage, the Bucs were favourites with a 2-0 record Vs the Aces this year, but they struggled early on with the Aces leading 8-0 going into the bottom of the second. The home side then roared into the lead, only to give up 14 in the 6th inning, leading to an enthralling finish where the Bangor team walked off 28-27 victors.

Winner of the day…. Softball Ulster!
